ONE lucky motorcyclist can consider himself a walking miracle today after escaping with slight injuries.
His Yamaha motorcycle was totally crushed under the huge Royal Mail articulated lorry in the horror smash.
The accident happened at the entrance to the Ipswich Royal Mail sorting office on Grafton Way shortly after 7.15pm yesterday.
A fire engine and the pump rescue ladder from Princes Street fire station attended the collision scene together with police.
The road was blocked and diversions through New Cardinal Street put in place.
ADO Karl Rolfe, speaking at the scene of the smash, explained that the role of the fire service was to make the scene safe. "We need to absorb the fuel spillage and stop it entering the water causes.
"We will also lift the axle of the lorry up and drag the motorcycle out and stop the fuel leaking from both vehicles," he said.
A spokesman from Suffolk Police confirmed that the male motorcyclist was taken to Ipswich Hospital with "slight" injuries, adding: "He was a very lucky man".
Royal Mail late shift manager Iain Richardson said that the lorry had been turning right into the yard when the collision occurred.
A member of staff had called the emergency services, with police arriving on the scene "in minutes" he said.
