A WAR widow whose window and door was smashed on Remembrance Sunday, today said: "The men who died for this country would be turning in their graves after this".

Cathie Bankier, 60, of Raeburn Road, Ipswich, whose husband died while defending his country in Belfast, woke up to the sound of smashing in the early hours of Sunday morning to find a brick had been thrown through her back door and her front window.

This was the same day she was going to London to take part in the Remembrance Day parade to commemorate the millions who died in war.

She was the representative for Essex and Suffolk War Widows Association, who laid the cross on the Cenotaph in central London.

Cathie, who is the regional organiser for the association, said she was extremely angry that people could get away with such vandalism.

She said: "I was awake at 2.30am and I heard a dog yelping but I didn't think anything of it.

"Then I heard this terrible smash and minutes later the second one. It was then I realised something bad had happened. I came through and saw what they had done. They have not only ruined my window and door, but my curtains as well.

"I went to the parade and left the man doing my door, but I was so angry. It just seems that everything these brave men died for is being eroded.

"They are lunatics, how can they do anything like this on Remembrance Day?"

Cathie, whose husband Robert was the first Royal Green Jacket to die in Belfast in 1971 said this is not the first time she has experienced vandalism like this.

She was also featured in the Star back in January 2000, as the vandals attacked her shed, setting it alight and over the year they have virtually pulled the whole thing down. She has also had other incidents of vandalism throughout the year.

"This is not the first time this has happened. Back in October they someone came and broke my window with a brick and they have completely destroyed my shed outside. Brick by brick they have taken it down and stolen everything in it.

"If it is children then what are they doing out at that time, and what are their parents doing that they think it is all right to go around terrorising people?" she added.
