GIVE up the drink or die.

That was the stark message given to Ricky Haveron as he sat in a police cell waiting to appear in court.

The 41-year-old of Downside Close, Ipswich, was in the dock at South East Suffolk Magistrates Court for being drunk and disorderly outside his home on the night of March 7.

After he admitted the charge, an allegation of failing to attend court on March 12 was not proceeded with by the prosecution.

Magistrates heard Haveron had been locked out by his partner, after an argument at the property.

Prosecuting, David Taylor said she refused to let him back in, and called the police.

When officers arrived, Haveron was drinking a can of special brew. They advised him to leave and sober up.

Haveron agreed to leave, but returned as soon as the officers moved away, and then started swearing at them, telling them to go back to the police station.

He said: "They had no choice but to arrest him, because he went back to the premises."

Mitigating, Raj Persaud agreed that Haveron 'became a little bit abusive.'

He added: "While he was in the cells yesterday a doctor told him that if he doesn't cut the drinking he will die. He needs to cut it out for self preservation."

Haveron was given a conditional discharge for 12 months, and ordered to pay £30 costs.
