A SUSPECTED arson attack at a Suffolk breakers yard has left the owner fearing that his village is being targeted.

The blaze at Whip Street Motors in Bramford is the latest in a string of fires along Paper Mill Lane.

Although Suffolk police are still investigating the blaze and said they are keeping an open mind, fire crews at the scene said they were considering it as deliberate.

Thick black smoke could be seen pouring across the town yesterday afternoon when the fire broke out.

Today, yard owners Greg and Jodhi >>> Baker were left counting the cost of the blaze which they claim destroyed around 40 of their cars.

The pair have taken over the running of the yard following the death of their father Geoff last month.

Jodhi said: "I know scrap is not worth much these days but this is our livelihood."

Both men frantically tried to move cars out away from the flames before even more could be ruined.

Greg, 18, was using a forklift truck to lift the cars away from the fire which threatened to destroy the site.

Jodhi now fears that the whole village is being targeted and not just their business.

He said: "There was a barn fire further down the road and at the same time two of our cars were set alight on the drive.

"There was also a fire at the landfill site (closeby) on the same day."

Fire crews were called to the blaze at around 2pm yesterday and the lane was cordoned off while they fought to tackle the blaze.

At the scene Assistant Divisional Officer Karl Rolfe said: "We haven't located the actual source of the fire but we are considering the situation is possibly deliberate. We have had other incidents in that area."

Hitting out at those responsible he said: "Our appliances and equipment were tied up dealing with this incident.

"I just hope a time doesn't come where a deliberate fire stops us doing something more serious."

No one was hurt in the fire, but this is around the fifth time that some of the cars have been set alight in the last year.

During the weekend Suffolk fire attended a number of fires including a kitchen fire in Woodbridge Road at around 11pm yesterday.

A number of car and paper bank fires were also keeping them busy.

At 10.12pm on Saturday a crew tackled a blaze at a paper bank in Tesco car park at Copdock.

Around the same time rubbish caught fire at the back of Lloyds Bank in Nacton Road.

A paper bank also caught light at Needham Market Middle School at 4.30pm on Saturday.

At midnight on Saturday a car caught fire at Europa Way in Sproughton.

On Sunday afternoon crews were called out again just before 3pm to put out a car fire in The Street, Martlesham, and less than two hours later a car was alight in Frobisher Road, Ipswich.
