HUNDREDS of homes across west Ipswich, Bramford and Sproughton woke up dry today after a major water main burst at the former sugar beet factory.

Anglian Water said the burst was caused by the ground shifting. That happened because weeks of dry weather had been followed by sharp rain over the last few days.

Engineers were called to the site, found the problem and restore water to homes by mid-morning.

The area affected a large number of premises, and even those which did not lose their water supply altogether suffered a serious loss of water pressure.
