SUB-ZERO temperatures and a light covering of snow caused problems for drivers throughout Suffolk today.

And weather forecasters were warning that the cold snap could cause problems for New Year's Eve revellers tonight.

They were urging people planning to celebrate outside to wrap up well – officials from the East Anglian Ambulance Service have warned of the dangers of hypothermia.

They pointed out that alcohol can make people feel warmer than they are, and if they stand around outside in sub-zero temperatures wearing only party clothes, they could become ill.

Police believe that two early-morning accidents in Suffolk were weather related – at Haughley Green and at Cavendish Street in Ipswich.

No one was hurt in either crash.

Gritting lorries were out overnight treating major roads, but minor roads remained frosty and some of the grit was freezing itself.

The government's Met Office expects temperatures in Ipswich to fall to minus four degrees centigrade overnight, and to reach a maximum of only plus two degrees for the next two days.

After that the temperatures could rise slightly – but there will still be night frosts – and there is a chance of more wintry weather returning to East Anglia at the weekend.

However it does look likely to remain dry over the next few days – they are not predicting any more snow apart from the odd flurry today.
