A WOMAN was left fighting for her life last night after her car left the road and ploughed into a tree.

A red Ford Ka, driven by the 25-year-old casualty, had been travelling along the A137 in Wherstead, close to the entrance of Jimmy’s Farm.

Police officers, firefighters, paramedics and the air ambulance were called to the scene at around 9am yesterday.

The woman, who is believed to be from Harwich, was driving from Ipswich towards Manningtree.

Firefighters used hydraulic cutting gear to cut her free from the car before she was treated by paramedics.

She was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge by the East Anglian Air Ambulance where her condition was said to be potentially life threatening having suffered serious pelvic and leg injuries.

The road was closed off while police cleared the scene of the accident and carried out forensic examinations.

Residents living close to the scene said they were shocked when the emergency services began to arrive.

Valerie Craigie, of The Street, said: “You can hear them [emergency services] going through and it’s quite frightening – you just hope that it’s nothing too serious.

“It’s a horrible thought – it could be someone’s daughter or wife going to work – it’s awful.”

Jane Boon, who lives close to where the incident happened, added: “It happened before I got here.

“There were quite a lot of vehicles down there and the helicopter.

“It’s a very busy road with it being the main road to Harwich.”

Police are appealing for information and would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision, or the car prior to the crash. Please call PC Steve Griggs at Suffolk’s Serious Collision Investigation Team on 101.
