THE widow of millionaire shooting victim Tony Fetherston is preparing to come face to face for the first time with the man accused of her husband's death.

Margaret Fetherston is awaiting a call from the Foreign Office to go to a Caribbean courtroom where she will see Joseph Hazel.

Mrs Fetherston, who lives near Woodbridge, is a key witness in the police investigation into the death of her husband Tony, 65, who was killed at point-blank range with a gun during an incident at the couple's holiday home on St Kitts nearly two years ago.

Judges on St Kitts are preparing to hold a preliminary hearing to assess the evidence in the case and to ensure that both the prosecution and defence counsel are ready for the crown court trial next year. Hazel has denied murder. If he is found guilty he will be sentenced to death by hanging.

However, it remains unclear when the hearing will take place and so far three different dates have been given for it this month. It is now expected that the trial will begin next week and witnesses to be flown out to the Caribbean will include forensic scientists who spent seven months examining saliva from four suspects and looking for a match with DNA on a mask.

A hearing has already taken place and Peter Allcorn, the British Honorary Consul on St Kitts, was told at 7am one morning to be in court two hours later.

He was Frinton-born Mr Fetherston's closest friend on the island and he was contacted by Mrs Fetherston as she barricaded herself inside the holiday bungalow at Basseterre while the killing took place.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said the preliminary hearing would start today. However, reporters on the island said they were told the original date was October 15 and now it had been put back to October 22.
