A WIFE who accused her Egyptian husband of assaulting her while she fought to keep him in the country has withdrawn her complaint.

But Mohamed El Naggar, 33, will still appear before South East Magistrates' Court on July 4 to see if the case against him will be dropped.

Theresa El Naggar, 31, withdrew her complaint in a statement to Ipswich police this week .

She later told the Evening Star: "I dropped the charge because I realise there is still a lot more between us than stupid arguments.

"I dropped the charges simply because I love him and I have tried and tried but I can't go on without him."

She said she had no family of her own and, since the affair, friends had deserted her. She had also suffered from post-natal depression following the birth of the couple's daughter Hidaya in January.

The Crown Prosecution Service is currently reviewing the file.

A spokesman said: "The withdrawal of the charge was relatively recent and we are waiting for a file from the police. We would still consider proceeding with the case even with if the complaint is withdrawn."

The couple met in Ipswich and married at the registry office in March 2001 shortly after he arrived in the UK without a visa.

Mrs El Naggar went on to front a high-profile media campaign, which included a letter to the Home Office from Ipswich MP Chris Mole.

She even appeared on television to fight a deportation order on her husband set for June 14.

But today she is fighting her husband's bail conditions, set at his last hearing on May 24, which prevent him returning to the couple's Newson Road home.

The court heard how the Egyptian allegedly hit his wife on the side of the head and dragged her by the hair.

A defence lawyer told the court Mr El Naggar's wife received an injury to the wrist when she tried to hit him with the phone and his client was acting in self defence.

Mrs El Naggar, who has three children from a previous marriage, is also due back in court on July 4 accused of shoplifting three items of clothing from Debenhams on Cornhill.
