TWENTY-ONE years ago the curtain was raised on a song and dance spectacular that brought foot-tapping fun to the theatre.

Next week the annual show returns and despite being called Sounds Familiar, the ever-popular show is far from being the same old performance year in year out.

In fact the show, the flagship production of the Ipswich Operatic and Dramatic Society (IODS) which opens on October 10, has grown into one of the best-loved musical events on the Spa Pavilion calendar.

For four days a cast of 50 will perform a variety of colourful and energetic dance routines at the Felixstowe theatre and fill the auditorium to the rafters with a range of well-known songs.

This year's highlights include visits to the music of New York's Broadway and London's West End and there are compilations of Ivor Novello and Simon and Garfunkel providing the latest productions 'stand up and sings'.

The 21st anniversary show will also see the welcome return of Gilbert and Sullivan.

And no Sounds Familiar is complete without the presence of IODS's resident constabulary and the trademark Policeman's Ball.

Once again the direction is provided by Margaret Mudd and Mary Meredith who, with the help of their cast, have made this year's Sounds Familiar yet another not-to-be-missed, spectacular show full of fun, laughter, music, dance and energy.

The show runs from Wednesday to Saturday and the Evening Star has five pairs of tickets up for grabs for the Thursday, October 11 performance.

To be in with a chance of winning just answer the following question:

This year marks the 21st production of Sounds Familiar. When was the first one staged?

Was it: a) 1961 b) 1971 or c) 1981?

Send your entries to Sounds Familiar Competition, c/o Jo Macdonald, Evening Star, 30 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich, IP4 1AN. The closing date for entries is Tuesday, October 9.

nSounds Familiar is at Felixstowe Spa Pavilion from October 10 to 13 with performances at 7.30pm each night and a 2.30pm matinee on Saturday.

Tickets cost from £5 and are on sale at the theatre or by calling 01394 282126.
