A woman has been charged with attempted murder following a flat fire in Ipswich which left a woman with serious burn injuries.

A woman has been charged with attempted murder following a flat fire in Ipswich which left a woman with serious burn injuries.

Emergency services were called shortly before 3.50am on Monday, May 13, to reports of a flat fire in Fitzgerald Court.

Police, fire crews and ambulance staff attended the scene of the blaze.

According to a police spokesman, a woman in her 30s suffered serious burn injuries as a result of the flat fire and was rushed to Ipswich Hospital for treatment before being transferred to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.

She was later moved to the Chelsea and Westminster burns unit where she remains.

Four firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus used a nine-metre ladder to rescue the woman from the second floor flat.

After the fire, the flat was left with blackened walls and windows, damaged by the smoke.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service later confirmed that everyone else was accounted for and that no other members of the public had been injured as a result of the fire.

Fiona Foster, 33, of Old Foundry Road, Ipswich, was arrested by police at around 8.30am on Tuesday morning, May 13, and taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

She had since been charged with attempted murder and arson with intent/reckless as to whether life was endangered and was remanded in custody until her first court appearance.

Foster appeared at Ipswich Magistrates' Court today, Tuesday May 14.

The woman who suffered serious injuries in the blaze was named in the magistrates' court charge sheet as Valeria Vargas.

Foster was remanded in custody until her next court appearance, at Ipswich Crown Court on Wednesday, May 15, 10am.
