A woman is fighting for her life in hospital today after a car crashed into a house in Great Blakenham, near Ipswich, last night.

The woman, aged in her 30s, is believed to have been travelling from Needham Market when the “small green” car she was driving crashed into a house in Stowmarket Road, Great Blakenham, at 9.15pm on Saturday (October 21), police said.

She was taken by land ambulance to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge with a life-threatening head injury.

She remains at the specialist hospital today in a critical condition.

The road was closed for several hours while an investigation into the collision took place.

Emergency services including the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, the East of England Ambulance Service Trust, a volunteer critical care paramedic from Suffolk Accident and Rescue Service (SARS), and the East Anglian air ambulance attended the scene.

A Suffolk Constabulary spokesman said: “Police would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or seen the manner of driving of the vehicle beforehand.

“Anyone with any information should contact the roads policing team on 101, quoting incident number 411 of the October 21.”

The house involved in the crash sustained significant damage. Earlier this morning, the homeowner, who did not wish to be named, said: “I am in a state of shock. The emergency services and the district council building team were all brilliant.

“I don’t know what happened but I hope she makes a full recovery. We are all thinking of her.”

Next-door neighbour Sinclair Laplace said he heard a “massive thump” when the crash happened.

“I was watching a film on the TV when I heard a massive thump,” the 50-year-old technician said.

“I did not know what it was but it just sounded unusual. I came outside and saw the car crushed against the house.

“All of the other neighbours came out and we immediately called for an ambulance which was here in about 15 minutes.

“Fortunately a car full of nurses, who were on their way out for a night out in Norwich, happened to drive past and stopped to help out as much as they could.

“It is surreal and we still cannot believe what has happened. We are all thinking of the woman and her family and friends.”
