SAFETY campaigners are today calling for a crossing on the notorious A11 to be closed immediately, after it claimed another life.

The latest crash on the A11, involving two cars, left an elderly woman dead and three other people in hospital.

The accident happened at the Tuddenham crossing of the road close to the Fiveways Roundabout at Barton Mills, near Mildenhall, just after 5pm on Sunday .

The victim suffered multiple injuries, and was freed from the mangled wreckage of her car by firemen and she was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge. The East Anglian Air Ambulance attended but she was taken to hospital by land ambulance due to failing light, but she died either en-route or shortly after she arrived.

The woman's death comes less than three months after the crossing claimed the life of 79-year-old Christina Bowers, of Beck Row.

Her family, backed by politicians and campaigning locals, called for immediate action the make the blackspot safe or close it altogether.

The lack of response to the urgent calls has been condemned.

Furious Rona Burt, of Tuddenham Parish Council, said the crossing should now be shut.

She said: "I think it just needs to be closed. It's such a terrible junction and that's what we must campaign for now."

Mrs Burt will today begin calling local politicians in a bid for action.

She said: "A couple of years ago there were suggestions that it might be closed or something might be done to improve safety but nothing has happened and people keep being killed.

"I am very angry that nothing has happened. Getting on to the A11 from Tuddenham to go to Mildenhall is frighteningly dangerous - it's taking your life into your hands. I know many people who won't use it at all and instead go to Bury St Edmunds or Newmarket."

Inspector Jim White, of Suffolk police, said the latest crash happened at just after 5pm.

He confirmed an elderly woman had died but was unable to say exactly how old she was or where she was from, although it was thought she was local to the area.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said the woman was taken to Addenbrooke's suffering from serious injuries. Three other victims of the crash were taken to the hospital by road ambulance. It is not thought any of them received life-threatening injuries.

The East Anglian Air Ambulance also attended another crash on the A11, on Saturday morning.

The collision between a motorcyclist, and a car towing a caravan, ended in the rider being thrown from his bike and suffering leg fractures.

A Suffolk Accident Rescue Service doctor from Newmarket also attended the accident, which happened at about 10.47am near Elevedon, and the casualty was flown to orthopaedic surgeons at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
