A MAJOR Ipswich road that has been closed for several weeks for repair works was due to reopen today .

There was chaos for motorists when part of Woodbridge Road was closed for essential maintenance repairs four weeks ago.

Work was expected to take five weeks to complete but has been finished a week early.

Diversions were set up along Tuddenham Road and Colchester Road which often left rush hour drivers crawling at snail's pace due to the volume of traffic.

The road was closed from its junction with St Margaret's Green to Argyle Street from July 21, but was due to reopen at midnight yesterday.

Bus routes in the area will also return to normal.

Ipswich Borough Council's transport portfolio-holder Tanya de Hoedt said: “We have worked hard to complete this urgent work a week early, which is good news for everyone.

“We chose the summer holidays for this vital work as traffic flow is at its lightest. I do want to thank motorists and bus passengers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience experienced.”

Meanwhile, the emergency repairs at the Upper Brook Street/Dogs Head Street junction are set to be completed on Monday August 24.
