Word on the Street: People of Ipswich talk about Suffolk Police’s Close Pass cycling operation

Suffolk Police are trading their uniform for a bicycle as they start their cycling safety operation tomorrow, Wednesday, October 4.

Police in the county are running a cycling safety operation this week to display the dangers of motorists driving too close to cyclists.

The operation, called Close Pass, will take place in and around the Ipswich town centre throughout the day today.

Police and community support officers will be cycling around Ipswich equipped with cameras to record any driving offences such as motorists overtaking too closely to cyclists, follow too closely behind them, or cut them up by turning left across their path.

If an offence is spotted, a report will be sent to uniformed officers on motorcycles who will then stop the offending vehicle. The offender will then be given the opportunity to participate in a voluntary educational input at a site they will be escorted to, or they will be issued with a Traffic Offence Report if they refuse.
