Local MP and junior health minister Ben Gummer has formally started work on a new £6m super health centre on the site of the former West Villa hostel in the east of the town.

The new centre will be the home of the combined Lattice Barn and Woodbridge Road GP practices. It will have 25,000 patients on its books.

It will have 25 consulting and treatment rooms and an on-site pharmacy.

Mr Gummer said he was delighted to see the start of the work on the project – which showed the way forward for GPs practices as more medical work was carried out away from hospitals.

It is not yet decided whether the centre will be open seven days a week
