A man has been rushed to hospital with burns to his hands after a fire broke out in an Ipswich car garage.

Firefighters were called to the scene at HiQ Ipswich Tyres and Autocare in Woodbridge Road just after 12.20pm today and are still working to bring the blaze under control.

Two cars are also “well alight”, a spokeswoman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said.

She said one “male casualty” had been taken to Ipswich Hospital by ambulance for treatment to burns on his hands.

Four fire engines – two from Ipswich East and one each from Woodbridge and Ipswich Princes Street – are in attendance.

Crews are using three main jets and two hose reels to douse the flames and the brigade spokeswoman said “good progress” was being made.

She added the Environment Agency and Anglian Water had been informed because there was believed to be asbestos in the roof.

Suffolk Constabulary is also at the scene to manage traffic.
