Twenty-three entries were submitted from around the country and world, including Australia and USA. But it was Ipswich man Alf Fairweather, 43, who took the title.

Mike Keen, head chef and owner of The Brewery Tap, said: “It was a really good egg: it had the right amount of pickle and the right level of acidity. The whole weekend was great and we look forward to next year’s event.”

The championship was part of the pub’s fifth-annual Junkaloo festival over the weekend, which also included live music and Morris dancing, and formed part of the Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival Fringe programme. Around 500 people attended.
