Worried mum warns parents

A WORRIED mum is urging all parents to warn their children to be on their guard even while on school property after an incident involving her ten-year-old daughter.

The Ipswich mother spoke out after her child was approached by a man of European appearance while she was taking part in an after-school tennis club at Copleston High School on Thursday.

Police initially reported the incident to have taken place near to the school but the girl's mother said it was in the car park within the grounds.

"My daughter was taking part in a tennis class after school and left the court to go to the toilet," said the mum.

"My other daughter was there too but the man did not speak to her. To my younger daughter he asked for her to get in his car and said her friends would be joining her later.

"She didn't answer him but just ran away. This is the kind of thing every parent fears, fortunately my daughter had the presence of mind to move away from the man quickly.

"I feel so concerned that she was supposed to be safe and taking part in a school activity and I want all parents to make sure their children are as cautious as she was," the mum added.

Laurie Robinson, head teacher at Copleston, confirmed the girl had reported the incident to the school and said he was liasing with the police.

"I have informed all our coaches, instructors and teaching staff who are being

extra alert about this man and this potential problem in general.

"We are currently carrying out a revision on school security and this incident will be included in that revision. Also we have alerted the area education officer so a warning can be given to other schools," he added.

The incident happened at about 7.30pm on Thursday. The man is described as being of European appearance and wore a dark jacket and light coloured trousers. It is believed he drove a blue vehicle similar to an Escort possibly 'H' registration.
