HE may have been rejected by the X Factor judges, but Clacton's very own singing star, William Hooper, was winning the fans over yesterday in his home town.
The 82-year-old, who made the “boot camp” stage of the popular talent show, was at the town's library to lend his support to International Older People's Day.
William donned his trademark jacket and bowtie before wowing both library staff and his fans by singing some songs.
The event was one of many taking part across Essex along with a cream tea dance in Clacton and reflexology, Wii Fit and karaoke sessions in Chelmsford
At Colchester's Lion Walk Activity Centre there was a host of events with U's legend Peter Wright, now in his 70s, and mayor Henry Spyvee lending their support.

The aim of the campaign is to celebrate the “huge contribution” older residents make to society and encourage older people to stay active.
David Finch, from Essex County Council, said: “Older People's Day is about enjoying life, whatever your age is.
“In Essex we are proud to have excellent support services in place to support our older or vulnerable people.
“Older People's Day is truly about celebrating these residents as well as reminding them what services are available in the county to improve their quality of life.”
