POLICE are hunting for the mindless yobs who smashed windows at an Ipswich library three times in the space of a week.

Gainsborough Library in Clapgate Lane was targeted on September 30, October 2 and October 5, with vandals causing thousands of pounds' worth of damage when concrete was thrown.

The high level windows are now boarded up while Suffolk County Council orders the replacements.

Today, Graham Newman, the county council's portfolio holder for adult and community services, condemned the attacks and urged the public to support police in finding the culprits.

He said: “We are very concerned about the incidents of vandalism that have taken place at Gainsborough Library.

“Lots of people benefit from the library so it's upsetting and disappointing for the whole community.

“We ask people to contact police if they see or hear anything suspicious so these incidents can be quickly dealt with.”

A spokesman for Suffolk County Council said it was too early to determine the exact cost of the damage.

Despite the problems, the library is opening to the public as normal, with staff determined not to let the yobs defeat them.

Pc Andy Blacker, from Suffolk Constabulary's South East Ipswich Community Reassurance Team, said public support in preventing further attacks was vital.

He said: “We are aware of the problem and are interested in anyone with knowledge which can assist us in our enquiries.”

Those who can help should call Pc Steve Bright at Ipswich police on 01473 613500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
