SAVE our market! That's the cry that is coming from all corners of the area.

So far 200 of our coupons have been returned to the Evening Star offices.

Most have been signed by one person, some have been signed by a couple and a few are representing the views of a whole family.

Only one of the 200 wants to see the market closed – but the sender wasn't prepared to sign it, only writing "No need for any market, the town shops are enough!"

Several of the coupons included letters about the market, and a special page of readers' thoughts on the market is being planned for later in the week.

The coupons come in the wake of our on-line poll which also shows a massive majority in favour of retaining the market in what is our most successful online poll ever (see homepage).

The results were welcomed by market traders' leader Mike Young.

"It's good to know there is so much interest in the market, that so many people are behind us in our battle for survival," he said.

"Some time ago I was told by someone from the Civic Centre that people in Ipswich weren't worried the future of the market – these figures show that isn't the case."
