A TEENAGER was left fighting for his life after a freak accident on a cricket field.

Phillip Govier, 18, from Hoxne, near Eye, was playing for Diss Cricket Club's second XI when he was involved in a collision with a member of his own team and suffered serious head injuries.

Colleagues gave him immediate first aid and an ambulance was on the scene within a few minutes of Saturday's collision.

The East Anglian Air Ambulance was also called and it took Phillip to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

He was later transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, where his condition was said last night to be critical.

His parents, who were at his bedside last night, were said to be "absolutely devastated".

Players and officials of Diss Cricket Club and their opponents from Downham Market were left "stunned and devastated" by the incident. The Division One Norfolk Alliance match was abandoned after the incident and fixtures involving Diss teams were cancelled out of respect.

The collision happened in a match between the two sides was being played at Diss. Downham Market's second XI were batting and a ball was skied into the outfield by a batsman after about 30 overs into the game.

Phillip and a colleague both ran to try to make the catch, but there was a heavy collision between the two fielders. It is believed Philip's head was accidentally hit by his colleague's knee in the accident.

Paddy Quick, vice-chairman of Diss Cricket Club, said both teams had been shocked by Phillip's injuries.

"We are all still stunned and devastated by the incident and very concerned about Phillip. Everyone is hoping that he makes a quick and full recovery," he added.
