POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a car accident in the early hours of Thursday morning in which a young woman was left undiscovered in a ditch for seventeen hours.

The accident happened on the A1101 in Shippea Hill near the Cambridgeshire border at around 12.10am on Thursday morning. The nineteen-year-old told police she was driving from Cambridgeshire to Lakenheath when she came round a corner and was confronted with two pairs of headlights.

She said one of the cars hit her as they went past causing her to lose control of her black Chevrolet and go in to the ditch. The cars did not stop and it was not until 5.15pm that day she was discovered by somebody working in a field near by.

A police spokesman said: "After this young woman's car went into the ditch it could not be seen and she was very lucky to be discovered. She was taken to Lakenheath hospital where she was treated for hypothermia and has now been released."

It is thought the two vehicles may have been racing each other and that one may have been white in colour. Police would like to hear from anyone travelling along that stretch of road late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.
