Archant

People in parts of Suffolk were treated to an unofficial preview of the Queen's 90th birthday flypast yesterday.

And here you can see a gallery of the formidable titans of the sky sent in by readers.

The 29 RAF aircraft involved in the event passed over The Mall and Buckingham Palace, to the delight of onlookers and the royal family, at 1pm on Saturday.

But at 12.45pm some of the faster and more modern planes could be seen in the skies of East Anglia as they prepared for a quick dash south to London.

While the Second World War Spitfire and Hurricane from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight came via Bury St Edmunds two Hercules, a pair of Typhoons, a pair of Tornados, a C-17 and an Atlas were seen flying at low altitude right over the heart of Ipswich.

Shortly after they were followed by the famous Red Arrows display team screaming overhead.

The flypast over London saw the planes separated by 30 seconds thanks to military precision and careful planning.

The gaps between phases of the display when they were over Suffolk were different as the distance to travel and their differing flight speeds had to be taken into account in order to create the perfect event over Buckingham Palace.

The pilots would have followed the A12 to London which, towards its southern end in the city, lines up closely with The Mall.
