A SUFFOLK schoolboy is due to appear in court today, charged with causing grievous bodily harm after a stabbing at Stradbroke High School.

Norwich City academy footballer Benjamin Goddard, 15, was critically injured in the stabbing on Friday.

Another 15-year-old was arrested and taken to Bury St Edmunds police station for questioning before being charged on Saturday.

He is due to appear before St Edmundsbury magistrates.

Benjamin's condition is said to be improving in intensive care at Ipswich Hospital and prayers have been said for him.

The hospital is no longer issuing updates to the media but family friends said his condition was stable – although he was not out of danger yet.

Members of his family have been keeping a bedside vigil.

Prayers for the recovery of Benjamin were said during two services conducted by Rev David Streeter at All Saints Church, Stradbroke, yesterday.

"Everyone is shocked by what happened and our thoughts and prayers are with Benjamin and his family," Mr Streeter said.

The area in which the incident took place was sealed off by police soon afterwards to allow forensic investigations to be carried out.

School was restarted after the 360 pupils – from more than a dozen local villages – had been evacuated.

Sammy Morgan, director of the Norwich City Football Club Academy, said Benjamin, a member of one of the youth teams, was " a quiet lad".

"He was recommended for trial at the academy and he came here and impressed us. He's a very committed lad.

"He has potential and it is a terrible blow for him. We hope that the fitness he has will get him through this situation," he said.

"We were unaware until we received a call from his father yesterday. I have asked him to keep us informed. Our thoughts are with him and his family," he added.
