Ipswich Town defender Luke Woolfenden believes that he’s getting to grips with the pace and the intensity of the Premier League, but he still finds it ‘a bit surreal’ to represent the club at the highest level.
The Blues picked up their first point of the season on Saturday afternoon, drawing 1-1 with Fulham at Portman Road. It came after tough defeats at home to Liverpool and away at Manchester City, where they faced two of the strongest sides in world football.
Having defended against the likes of Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland, Woolfenden can now claim that he’s taken on some of the best players in Europe, which has been a lifelong dream for the Town academy graduate.
“It’s a bit surreal, to be fair,” he said. “We got promoted so quickly, back-to-back, so it’s almost a ‘pinch yourself’ moment every time you go out there.

“You’re lining up and it’s a Premier League game. It’s what you dream of as a kid, so it’s truly unbelievable.”
Ipswich have had spells in all three games where they enjoyed time in possession, created chances and threatened in the final third. It shows that they can compete at the level, something which Woolfenden believes is crucial.
“It’s encouraging, but it’s something we pride ourselves on,” he explained.
“We might not have the biggest names and all that stuff, but at the end of the day, if you go out there, you stick to your principles and you’re brave on the ball, there’s no reason why you can’t dominate any team in this league.
“To be fair to the fans in the ground, we concede and it’s so good that they’re with us the whole way. Straight away, they didn’t moan. In previous years, they probably would’ve done, they would’ve got on our backs, but I think they’re recognising what we’re doing and how far we’ve come.
“The only way we’re going to succeed in this league is if everyone is together and everyone keeps going. No matter what the setback is, we need to stay together and keep pushing forward.”
