HOW would you like to own a unique piece of football memorabilia – and help a worthwhile cause at the same time?

The Variety Club of Great Britain, Northern Region, recently organised a tribute dinner to honour Newcastle United boss Sir Bobby Robson and his achievements in football.

A host of leading celebrities from the world of football, including England coach Sven Goran Eriksson and Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, attended the glittering event.

Ex-Ipswich stars Kevin Beattie, Mick Mills and Terry Butcher, all of whom played for Sir Bobby during his 13 years in charge of Ipswich, were also in attendance.

And while Newcastle skipper Alan Shearer was among the top table guests, his team-mates were also at the dinner to join in the tribute.

Former England star Gary Lineker and ex-Leeds boss David O'Leary were also there, along with Channel 4's extrovert racing expert John McCririck.

Among the auction items on the night was a framed photograph of Sir Bobby at his desk, which he and 27 other leading personalities autographed.

But the person who successfully bid £1,000 for the signed picture later reneged on his bid and the Variety Club are keen to make up the shortfall.

Northern Region chairman John Pearce said: "The event raised over £40,000 for disabled and under-privileged children, but we are obviously missing £1,000 in valuable funds.

"This is a tremendous item – the frame is 3ft by 2ft 6in – and we would welcome bids from any interested parties."

Offers must be made by post to Mr Pearce at the Variety Club of Great Britain Northern Region, 15 Westsyde, Darras Hall, Ponteland, Newcastle upon Tyne NE20 9LS.
