Achilles 2 Old Newton 4

OLD Newton, enjoying their best season for some time in the Senior Division, shook off last week's Omnico Cup semi-final defeat with this well-deserved win.

Achilles were found wanting defensively with all four goals.

The in-form Andy Richards opened the scoring when he ran on to lob over namesake Grant Richards in the 13th minute.

Before the home side recovered from this set back, Pilborough set off on a determined run and finished with a fierce rising shot.

Achilles got back in the game on the half hour mark when first Craig Coote scored with a right-foot volley from Reeder's cross and two minutes later Symonds rifled in the equaliser.

Old Newton went in front after 33 minutes when the visitors were first to react when King hit the post. Thorndyke squared the ball to Collins who did not get a clear contact but the ball went just inside the post.

Achilles came out in more determined mood but defenders stood off Coleman when he weaved into the box and Taylor tracking back sent him tumbling.

The penalty from Clarke went high and wide, but Achilles were unable to claw their way back and Pilborough sealed the win in the 75th minute when he spun off his marker to set up Clarke with a perfect ball across the face of the goal.
