Ward has left his post as assistant manager at Stockport County, having previously been the manager at Carlisle United until November of last year.
The experienced Ward was assistant manager to Graham Taylor at Watford from 1982, and then followed Taylor to Aston Villa in 1987.
The 58-year-old has since been the manager of York City, Bristol Rovers, Bristol City, Cheltenham Town and Carlisle.
