SUFFOLK Winter Alliance meetings at Rushmere are always well supported, but it is essential to have fine weather to accommodate the large entry.

However, that was not the case for the latest meeting in the Alliance programme with continuous wind and rain from the tee-off time at 8.30am.

It was not until early afternoon that the skies cleared and the sun did appear for the later starters, but by this time a third of the field had called it a day with only just over 100 completing the 18 holes.

Despite this, the course held up really well, with hardly any build-up of water on the greens, and some good scores were returned.

Nic Grundtvig (Seckford) won the professionals' prize with a very good one under par 69. He dropped one shot on the first nine, but picked up two shots on the inward half.

Kelvin Vince (Fynn Valley) was runner-up, two shots behind and Paul Wilby (Fynn Valley) and Tony Dobson (Bourne Hill DR) were joint third.

But Dobson claimed first prize in the Stableford better-ball event with his partner Alan Middle who plays off four at Woodbridge. They had 41 points.

The next meeting of the Alliance is tomorrow at Seckford, another course that thrives on winter conditions.
