KEVIN Beattie, the greatest-ever player to wear an Ipswich Town shirt, has revealed he once tried to take his own life.
The startling revelation comes in Beattie's newly-published autobiography, which details the highs and lows of a career blighted by injury.
Now 53, Beattie recalls how a surprise visit by pal Bob Shelley saved his life after he had decided to end his agony.
Beattie, who was voted Town's all-time greatest player in a poll by Evening Star readers, says he polished off a bottle of vodka and popped some sleeping pills but was still conscious when he heard a knock at the door.
Shelley talked Beattie out of taking his own life, and the Portman Road legend admits: “If he hadn't arrived, I am positive I would have seen it through.”
