IPSWICH Town are today desperately scouring Europe for some top-class opposition in a bid to revive their pre-season plans.

The Blues have suffered another blow after FC Twente Enschede pulled out of a scheduled showpiece friendly visit to Portman Road on August 2.

It is understood the Dutch club had already lined-up a fixture with Spanish side Real Zaragoza for the same date.

Twente, the former club of Blues legends Arnold Muhren and Frans Thijssen, had been pencilled in to replace Athletic Bilbao, who pulled out of the original fixture on August 1.

The latest setback leaves Town without a warm-up contest on the weekend before Joe Royle's side open their Nationwide League Division One campaign with a home clash against Reading.

A Blues spokesman said: "I can confirm the match against FC Twente is off.

"We are still in negotiations with an agent for another match for that date, which is an important part of the build-up to the new season for us."

Meanwhile, England Under-21 goalkeeper Rhys Evans is believed to be the latest transfer target for Blues boss Royle.

It is believed Royle sees Evans as the man to fill the troubled number one shirt after giving Andy Marshall a free transfer.

The 21-year-old is available on a free transfer after being released by Chelsea during the close season.

Ipswich will suffer stiff competition from both Bolton and Stockport, who are also tracking the highly-rated keeper.

Evans spent five years at Stamford Bridge without making a first-team appearance.

But he has made a total of 22 league appearances in loan spells at Leyton Orient, QPR and Bristol Rovers and won 45 England caps at various levels.

Evans was part of the England Under-21 side that faced Serbia and Montengro and then Slovakia in European Championship qualifiers last month.
