BOWLS

TWO more matches have been played in their inter-club competitions by Ipswich & District IBC.

The ladies played Colchester in the Yetton Trophy first round and the men Falcon in the third round of the Denny Cup. Both matches ended in defeat.

Promising starts in each were followed by failure to hold the oppositions' pressure in the latter stages.

The ladies had looked forward to their match, aiming to avenge the defeat by their opponents in last season's third round. Their hopes were dashed by a strong Colchester team who won on three of the four rinks to run out 89-68 winners.

The one bright spot for Ipswich was the excellent win by Margaret Insley's rink at Colchester. In the other match there Stella Utteridge's team were soon in trouble, 16 shots adrift at 10 ends and no nearer at the finish.

At Ipswich, Isobel Morey's rink faced a strong team and were only seven shots down after 15 ends, but scored only one more shot while their opponents piled on 14.

Gwenda Rednall's team did well until the 17th end to lead by five shots, but failed to score again as the visitors took eight shots in the last four ends. Scores:

At Ipswich (32 shots – 55): S Allen, P Pettit, N Wright, G Rednall 21, J Foster 24, N Brown, J Essex, A Mann, I Morey 11, B Brown 31.

At Colchester (36 shots – 34): N Colne, A Cable, J Merchant, M Insley 25, I Tunn 7, B Burch, A Pink, A Gibson, S Utteridge 11, P Harris 27.

Scores at five ends 13-20, 10 ends 34-43, 15 ends 50-59, 18 ends 59-75.

For the first 14 ends in the Denny Cup, some top class bowling by both sides saw Falcon leading by just one shot. From that point things went badly for Ipswich, particularly in the last three ends, leaving Falcon winners by 83 shots to 65.

At Ipswich, Kelvyn Earthroll's rink battled well against experienced campaigner Joe Stamper for their six shot win. A very close game on John Rednall's rink stood at 15-all after 18 ends, but the visitors gained a five shot advantage in the last three.

At Falcon, Mark Royal's rink had an off day and were always in arrears. Andrew Friend's team let things slip after being just one shot down at 15 ends. Scores:

At Ipswich (36 shots – 35): C Ward, B Andrews, C Rumsby, K Earthroll 20, J Stamper 14, C Clarke, F Last, A Wyatt, J Rednall 16, J Rippey 21.

At Falcons (29 shots – 48): C Love, A Catchpole, A Brown, M Royal 14, D Gildersleeve 26, C Coles, P Page, A Sale, A Friend 15, M Green 22.

Score at five ends 15-22, 10 ends 35-36, 15 ends 49-53, 18 ends 59-67.
