British athletics stars head for Town

ATHLETICS: British international athletes are heading for Ipswich this weekend.Hurdler Tony Jarrett, sprinters Julian Goulding and Sarah Wilhelmy and high-jumper Jo Jennings will be at the Lancaster Northgate Stadium on Sunday.

BRITISH international athletes are heading for Ipswich this weekend.

Hurdler Tony Jarrett, sprinters Julian Goulding and Sarah Wilhelmy and high-jumper Jo Jennings will be at the Lancaster Northgate Stadium on Sunday.

They are adding their support to Ipswich Harriers' first-ever 'come and try' event, aimed at increasing both awareness of the sport and membership.

The club's coaching secretary, Ann Negus, is the main organiser. "We are trying to encourage people into sport," she said.

"There are no age restrictions – we will welcome everyone from nine to 90 – and we are naturally keeping our fingers crossed that the weather is good.

"People who come along will have the chance to try track and field events under the supervision of qualified coaches."

Ipswich mayor Richard Risebrow will perform the official opening ceremony at 11am, with some of the Harriers' own stars in attendance.

Long-jumper Jermaine Bernard, shot-putter Amy Wilson, javelin thrower Chris McManus and 400-metre runner Victoria Tunaley have all earned international recognition.

Ann added: "They are the living proof of what can be achieved and we are keen for people to come along and see what we have to offer at Ipswich Harriers."
