EAST Anglian derbies are back on the League fixture list for next season.

Just 24 hours after Ipswich's relegation to Division One was confirmed, Norwich failed in their bid for promotion to the Premiership.

The Canaries lost 4-2 on penalties to Birmingham after a high-energy, low-quality play-off final in Cardiff.

With the match locked at 1-1 after 120 minutes Norwich, who missed their last three penalties in the regular season, saw their fallibility from 12 yards come back to haunt them.

Iwan Roberts netted the first for Norwich. Stern John made it 1-1 and then Norwich midfielder Phil Mulryne saw his poor kick saved by Birmingham keeper Nico Vaesen.

Birmingham went 2-1 ahead though Paul Devlin before sub Daryl Sutch twisted the knife in the Canaries' wounds by rolling a week penalty wide of the post.

Stan Lazaridis made it 3-1 to Birmingham, Clint Easton pulled one back for Norwich - but when teenager Darren Carter smashed home the eighth kick, Birmingham knew they were going up.

After 90 minutes of tense stalemate, Norwich went ahead in the first minute of extra-time through an excellent header by sub Roberts.

But the Canaries then made the mistake of sitting back, allowing Birmingham to come at them. And they paid the price in the 102nd minute when Geoff Horsfield forced the ball home from close range.
