Club championship makes a splash

SWIMMING

AS one of the toughest collective swimming sides in the region, Ipswich Swimming Club always provides some impressive action.

This weekend the drama was particularly evident as Crown Pools played host to its home club's annual championship event.

Throughout the weekend the pool's spectators witnessed sensational swims by Suffolk stars Karen Pickering and Zoe Cray, while also watching the ever improving challengers from Ipswich's younger sector.

As always, the poolside was packed for this ever popular event, with mums, dads, siblings, coaches and swimmers all brought together for the hectic weekend of skilled swimming.

A number of personal bests were sent tumbling across the two sessions, though only one club record was broken in all.

This feat came from 12-year-old talented youngster, Sophie Poole in a spectacular freestyle performance.

Three Ipswich achievers took well deserved acclaim after walking away with first place in all four of their age group events.

This success belonged to the trio of eight-year-old Jessica Harvey, 11-year-old Kimberely Maskell and 14-year-old Matt Vinter.

Close races saw some tense drama across the age groups – particularly among the girls.

Molly Rhodes and Helen Powley fought tooth and nail for their positions in the Girls 13-year-old 100m freestyle event.

After a gripping race Molly took the top spot in 1.09.81, with Helen touching in just behind in a time of 1.10.01.

The 14-year-old female trio of Elisa Calver, Hannah Wood, and Kirsty Morgan also gave the crowd a tense final-stage event.

Just half a second finally split the girls finishing times – giving Elisa first place.

Ipswich's coaching staff were particularly proud of the latest championship, and of the dedication and team spirit shown by all swimmers.

They would also like to thank the many parents and supporters who volunteered to assist during the sessions.
