Ipswich Swimming Club held their annual Domestic Championships at Crown Pools over the weekend of 17th and 18th November.

Most of the swimming club turned out to compete and, as usual there, was enthusiastic support from parents and families.

Many volunteers are required to enable this type of event to take place and our thanks go out to the referees, timekeepers, poolside judges and not forgetting parents who help with duties such as selling raffle tickets, serving drinks etc.

This is one of the few events in the swimming calendar that gives the opportunity to eight and nine year old children to race in a competitive environment.

It was very refreshing to see so many young swimmers involved and do so well. These are the future of our club. Well done!

This years top girl award will be shared between Nine-year-old Lydia Decarvalho and Eleven year old Rachel Keeley, they both won all four of their races. Rachel had a brilliant Championship; she broke the 100m-backstroke record, which had been standing since 1985 in a time of 1.17.17 and then she went on to break the 100m-breaststroke record, which had stood since 1984 in a time of 1.28.54. Rachel just missed the records for the 100m freestyle and butterfly. Great swims!

Another record went to ten year old Kimberly Maskell in the 100m freestyle, which has stood since 1997 in a time of 1.12.68, Grace Calver who came second in this race also broke the record in 1.12.73.

The top boy award is also shared this year between eight-year-old James Poole, ten-year-old Andrew Bigley and fourteen year old Joe Rhodes, who all had great swims in winning all four of their events.
