CLUBS eligible to play in the FA Cup this season have every incentive to do well.

The winners of tomorrow's preliminary round will pocket a cool £1,000 – and teams successful in the first qualifying round will collect £7,500.

"This amount of money can be so important to clubs like ours," said Felixstowe and Walton United manager Paul Adams.

Jewson League Felixstowe travel to play Essex Senior League Leyton tomorrow knowing nothing about the London club, but Adams added: "We know that we want to win so that we can pick up some welcome money. It is about time the Football Association put more money into the lower leagues."

There has always been cash incentives to do well in cup competitions run by the FA but a club reaching the first round proper of the FA Cup would in the past receive less than a club winning a third preliminary round game this season.

All this area's Jewson League Premier Division sides are involved in the FA Cup tomorrow – and they could all do with the cash a cup run would bring.

Alex Stone from the FA press office confirmed the big increase in prize money. He said: "Payments to round winners has been increased considerably and the news has been well received by clubs."

Stone confirmed that winners of second qualifying round will also receive £7,500 with third qualifying round winners collecting £10,000, fourth qualifying round winners £20,000 and first round proper winners £30,000.

Felixstowe are in good heart after putting four goals past Maldon on Tuesday – their first win in the 2001/02 league campaign.

"Some of my new players were a bit nervous in the opening match against Soham and the Cambridgeshire side looked a good one," said Adams.

"We could have easily won our following three games. I am very pleased with how things have gone with every player doing well.

"We could have beaten Ipswich Wanderers and had the opportunities to beat Diss Town. Our win against Maldon was overdue and well deserved."

Mark Howard scored a hat-trick against the Essex side but he is expected to be back in the Ipswich Athletic side tomorrow. The talented striker plays his Saturday football in the Metaltec SIL.

Stuart Crawford will be missing through injury and Jonathan Bickers is also a doubt because of a knock.

"I know nothing about Leyton, but if we play as well as we did on Tuesday we must stand a good chance," added Adams. "We certainly have every incentive."

Adams has brought in a number of young players since he took over at Dellwood Avenue again during the summer.

He is planning for the future and at the same time looking to finish as high as possible in the table this term.

Ipswich Wanderers are at home to Kempston Rovers from the United Counties League, while Stowmarket Town entertain Ruislip Manor from the Spartan South Midlands League.

Woodbridge Town, who have a good record in cup competitions, are at home to fellow Jewson League side Diss Town in what should be an absorbing contest at Notcutt's Park.

Only two games take place in the Premier Division of the Jewson League tomorrow, but there is a full programme of First Division games.

The contest at Leiston Town should be interesting with Hadleigh United making their first visit since both clubs were in the Suffolk and Ipswich League.

Leiston broke their Jewson duck in midweek after their summer move from the SIL and will provide stiff opposition to a Hadleigh side that has made steady progress under manager Louis Newman for the last few years.

Needham Market have picked up after a shaky start and will be favourites to beat Haverhill at Bloomfields.

In the Metaltec SIL, leaders Grundisburgh, who have a 100 per cent record from three matches, do not have a game.

Old Newton, who won their first match last Saturday, are also idle.

Achilles are likely to feature in the shake-up for the Senior Division championship under the management off Trevor Childs.

The Stone Lodge Lane-based side, who face losing their clubhouse at the end of the season because of planned building work, are at home to Woodbridge Athletic.

Two clubs promoted back to senior football from the First Division at the end of last season, meet at Bramford.

Both will be looking for victories to get their season running nicely in what well be a campaign where the relegation issues will be closely fought.

Every point could prove vital to teams finding themselves at the wrong end of the table and few early points in the bag will be most welcome.

East Bergholt got back on track after losing their opening two matches an d with player manager Ian Gedny now back from holiday they will fancy their chances against a Walsham side that is always hard to beat.
