Ipswich Rugby Club Colts retained the Salehurst seven-a-side cup in a thrilling day's rugby on Sunday.

Although three invited sides did not turn up, Suffolk's playing chairman Roger Cheesman was full of praise for the "fabulous" display of fast and skilful rugby at Humber Doucy Lane.

All present agreed the standard of play was very high from the teams who attended.

The players included at least three young internationals, and with several past divisional and county youth players also involved, the play was often inventive and exciting.

Mike Hancock of Ipswich said afterwards it was some of the best rugby seen all season.

Winners were Ipswich with runners-up Colchester and Stowmarket third.

Many of the players who took part will be invited to join a new Suffolk under-20 squad to be formed at the beginning of next season.
