TWO swimmers from Deben Swimming Club have just finished competing in the Diana A.S.A. Midland District 2001 Age Group Championships in Coventry.
Eleven year old Mark Stevens had qualified to swim a range of events. Perhaps the most successful of these was the 200m Butterfly where he earned the bronze medal position in a time of 2.55.31(P.B.). The 4x50m Individual Medley was a tactically well swum race finishing with a 12th place in a time of 2.56.39(P.B.) The 200m Freestyle and 200m Backstroke proved more difficult for Mark and although he could not improve his personal best times in these events he still managed to keep up with the leaders finishing 16th 2.36.92 and 10th 2.54.68 respectively. The 400m Freestyle again was swum in good form and achieved 9th place in a time of 5.30.17(P.B.).
These results together with a silver medal on the 50m Butterfly sprint which was won in the sprint meet of these Championships in May in a time of 34.9 (P.B.) were then calculated within the relatively new British Age Group Category Awards scheme (BAGCATS) This placed Mark 5th overall in his age group which was a superb achievement for his first major competition in a 50m pool.
Julie Ward was also competing in the Deben colours and recorded the following results in the 17-19 age group. 100m Freestyle 1.04.84, 17th place,- 200m Individual Medley 2.41.34 , 17th place - and 100m Backstroke 1.14.51 17th place. Whilst Julie could not improve her personal best times on this occasion she is no stranger to this level of competition and consistently qualifies to race against the best in her age group.
