DAMIAN Wright is following in his father's footsteps.

The 14-year-old from Shotley is one of the country's most promising young Mini-stox drivers after catching the driving bug from dad, Adi, who is on the national stock car circuit.

Damian started on his 11th birthday and, by his own admission, took time to find top gear.

"It was a bit of a struggle for the first two years," he said. "But last year my dad built me a new car and I've made pretty rapid progress ever since.

"I've still got a fair way to go but recent achievements have given me a great deal of encouragement and I really feel confident about my future in the sport."

Damian joined other 11 to 16-year-olds in the Norfolk Gold Cup, an event based on 15 rounds raced over about eight months and in which drivers collect points, Formula One-style.

Going into the final, decisive race, Damian's points tally earned him pole position but on the day disaster, in the shape of a puncture, struck.

He had to be content with eighth place, but added defiantly: "I'll be back next year, when I'll be aiming to win it."
