PETER Jiggins and John Redden (Stoke-by-Nayland) proved the perfect partnership in the Suffolk Winter Alliance meeting at Seckford last week.

Last out on a very cold but dry day, Jiggins and Redden came in 48 points to take first place in the Stableford better-ball competition from Tony Dinwiddy (Felixstowe Ferry) and another Stoke-by-Nayland member Keith Smales.

They had posted 46 points that looked like a winning score until the Stoke pairing overtook them.

Jiggins and Redden had ten nett birdies and an eagle with nett pars on the remaining seven holes, with the eagle proving the difference between them and the runners-up.

Alex Lucas (Fynn Valley) led the way among the eight professionals that were in the field. He shot a four under par 63 that was three strokes better than Kelvin Vince, also Fynn Valley, with Robin Mann (Ufford Park) and Jon Markham (Stowmarket) sharing third place on 68.

Markham's card was spoilt when he took a double bogey six on the 17th, and with his partner Andy Holmes also failing to score on that hole, it cost them the chance of joint second place in the Stableford competition.

The Seckford course was in good condition for the time of year, and the major changes to the clubhouse facilities meant that the club was able to deal far more easily with numbers as for Alliance meetings.

The next meeting of the Alliance, and the final one for this year, is at Stoke-by-Nayland this Sunday where a shotgun start will take place at 9am. This is a change from the usual format.
