Ipswich Harriers heptathlete Katy Sealy insists she has unfinished business at the Commonwealth Games after being picked to represent the tiny Central American country of Belize.

The Bawdsey-based athlete qualifies through her Belize-born dad David and will be one of a handful of athletes representing the Commonwealth minnows in Glasgow, next month.

Four years ago, the ex-Farlingaye High School pupil competed at the Games in India but suffered an agonising injury which curtailed her involvement in the heptathlon.

Now, older, fitter and stronger, Sealy, 23, has ruled out her chances of winning a medal but that won’t stop her bursting with pride when her event starts on July 29.

“I competed in Delhi but I did not finish. Fingers crossed I will this time,” said Sealy, who competes in the Central American Senior Athletics Championships, in Honduras, next week.

“I tore my glute muscle while competing in the high jump but I still managed to jump a personal best, despite being in a lot of pain.

“I came back and did the shot put but there was no way I would have then been able to run the 200 metres so I had to pull out, which was disappointing.

“It was a great experience though and I now I have another opportunity, I have unfinished business.

“I am more experienced that I was four years ago when I was the youngest person in the field and I am aiming to beat my (heptathlon) personal best.”

Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill will be a notable absentee in the heptathlon – the Sheffielder is pregnant – but Great Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson will be involved, having just moved to third on the British all-time (heptathlon points) list behind Ennis-Hill and 2000 Olympic champion Denise Lewis.

“A couple of the athletes are miles ahead of me,” admitted Sealy, a member of the Harriers since she was 14.

“Jessica Ennis-Hill is at another level and then you have Johnson-Thompson who is a class competitor.

“I am going to Glasgow for myself and for Belize. I won’t be challenging for a medal but I want to break my personal best.

“I never quite made the England team as a junior but the chance to represent Belize is an opportunity I have got to take.”
