JOHN Frost, a member at Rushmere for more than 30 years, has landed a national title.

The 13-handicapper won the Barrett Golfseekers Golfer of the Year title at Mottram Hall in Cheshire with 38 Stableford points.

John, an unassuming man who is a retired engineer and production manager, could have been forgiven if he had shouted from the rooftops about his success last year.

But last week a Barrett Golfseekers Golfer of the Year coloured brochure found its way to one of John's regular Saturday morning golf partners.

'Frost, it's my first major' was the headline that was blazed across the front page with pictures of John in action and at the presentation.

John gained the right to play in the final by winning the weekly Golfseekers competition in southern Spain while on holiday.

"I heard about Barrett Golfseekers through friends at Rushmere," he said "and my wife Jennifer and I have since been on four holidays."

John's Spanish win took his to Mottram Hall where he lined up against 21 other finalists.

His 38 points enabled him to win by two shots in the grand final that was sponsored by First National Bank.

"I managed to keep my head down on this occasion," said John "and that had a lot to do with my victory."

He added: "Just before we were due to go out the heavens opened. I had not seen rain like it. But within half an hour the rain had stopped and it was a beautiful afternoon."

John also played in a separate competition with Jennifer, who is also a member at Rushmere, but they were not among the prizes.

John and Jennifer have won a couple of mixed events. "We won the Suffolk Mixed Open at Aldeburgh some years ago and we've also won a husband and wife foursomes at Rushmere."

Now John is national winner, and who knows, there might be more success to come in the future.
