Owen Giddings posted a couple of impressive championship best performances (CBP), at the annual Suffolk County Track & Field Championships, held at Northgate in Ipswich.

Giddings, of Ipswich Harriers, celebrated a sprints double in the under-17 men’s age group, pipping the talented Daniel Wong, of Benjamin Britten School, in both events.

Having equalled the CBP of 11.2 seconds on his way to the gold medal over 100m, Giddings went on to set a new CBP over 200m with 22.8. Wong clocked 11.4 and 23.6 to take silver in both races.

There were 10 other championship best performances throughout the day’s competition.

Jake Greenleaf, of Ipswich Harriers, registered a CBP of 39.5secs on his way to victory in the under-15 boys’ 300m, adding the 200m title by just edging out club-mate Jonathan Eley, who had earlier been crowned 100m champion.

Experienced race-walker Callum Wilkinson won the under-20 men’s 3K Walk in a CBP of 12mins 48.4secs, and the highly-rated Harry Hughes put his recent injury problems behind him by winning the under-17 men’s javelin crown in 69.28m, which was also a CBP.

In the under-13 girls’ age group, Waveney Valley AC’s Hannah Mayne re-wrote the championship record books in the long jump, with a best of 4.79m. Mayne also won the 100m (13.7) and 200m (28.5).

Fellow under-13 athlete Poppy Mayall, of Brandeston Hall, likewise produced a CBP in the shot putt with 8.72m.

Gemma Ramsey, of the Harriers, hurled the javelin out to 32.68m for a CBP in the under-15 category, and there were three new landmarks set in the under-17 women’s age group.

Sophie Tooley powered to victory in the 800m with a CBP of 2:13.8, her West Suffolk team-mate Emily Moyes did likewise in the 1,500m steeplechase (5:37.5), and Harriers’ Lana Fulcher launched the hammer out to 46.38m.

The final CBP came in the senior women’s rankings, where Harriers’ Georgina Howe eclipsed the previous championship best in the hammer with 45.02m.
