MARTIAL ARTS

KUK SOOL WON is becoming increasingly popularity in Ipswich.

The sport is a combination of different Korean Martial Arts and is not as aggressive as karate.

It concentrates on boosting self-confidence and respect as well as teaching self-defence and includes the use of weapons, such as ropes, swords and bats.

Kuk sool won has been taught in Ipswich for about eight years and is becoming increasingly popular with both men and women.

There are over 50 juniors at the club. But the age range extends to over 60, with approximately 45 seniors.

John Garrod is the main instructor at the Ipswich club and has achieved a second-degree black belt.

He has 13 members who have all completed their black belts, although the ability ranges between beginners and professionals.

John said: "We aim to teach people self-defence and boost their confidence, but the main point is to have fun.

"We have a wide range of members but try to accommodate all their needs."

Kuk sool won sesions are held on Wednesday nights at Hillside School, Ipswich and starts at 6pm with the junior's class and the senior class runs between 7 and 9pm.

There is also a class Friday nights at Whitton Sport Centre between 7-9pm.
