GEORGE Burley said today that the strength of the Premiership will hold Ipswich Town in good stead in their quest to do well in the UEFA Cup.

The Town manager also asked for backing from fans in what is going to be a more difficult season than last.

"We had wonderful support from our supporters during the second half of Saturday's 0-0 draw against Everton," said Burley.

"And we need all the backing we can get. People have got to lower their expectations.

"Last season was a phenomenal one for us. Something like that may never happen again. To survive in the Premiership is a result, and we must enjoy our stay.

"Football is a constant challenge and perhaps we are under extra pressure this season from media and fans after our fifth place and European qualification last term.

"If we had been where we are now 12 months ago everybody would have been pleased.

"It is a stronger English top division than when I played in the First Division for Ipswich under Bobby Robson.

"The strength is such that it will hold us in good stead when competing in Europe."

Burley also said that the experience of playing well against Torpedo Moscow in the last round would help his side face a Swedish outfit that impressed when he watched them win a recent league match.

"Helsingsborgs are a very experienced side with a good goalkeeper and two good front men," he said.

"Last season they beat Inter Milan in the Champions League. We made a mistake at the back to concede a home goal against Moscow and we must do our best to ensure we don't do the same tomorrow."

"But we are still in every competition, and plan to go on and reach the third round of the UEFA Cup," he added.
