FELIXSTOWE and Suffolk's Gwenda Rednall was foiled by a late charge in the opening round of the Two Wood Singles in the Steradent Womens All England Bowls championships at Royal Leamington Spa last night.

Rednall, mother of England international star John, raced 7-0 ahead after six ends against Hove's Debbie Stavrou, but the Sussex star hit back with scores on eight of the next 10 ends to edge ahead 12-10.

Back came Rednall with a double and single to inch in front 13-12, but Stavrou pounced with two singles and a double over the last three ends to snatch victory 16-12.

In another first round clash Ladleigh's Elizabeth Martin ran into a storm of shots from England's legendary skip Mary Price from Burnham, Bucks.

Prolific title-winner Price powered 9-0 ahead and later held a 15-5 lead and although Martin scored six shots over the next six ends, she faced an impossible task as Price swept home 16-11.
