IPSWICH Harriers are hoping to enjoy a big membership boost after a handful of top athletes backed a promotional drive for the club.
British international sprinters Julian Goulding and Sarah Wilhelmy and Wales international Catherine Murphy were at the Lancaster Northgate Stadium to support the Harriers' first-ever 'come and try' event.
The day was designed to increase awareness of the sport and boost membership.
And around 65 budding athletes braved pouring rain to take part.
"It was a huge shame that the weather was so bad," said Harriers spokeswoman Iris Leigh. "But we had a really excellent day despite the rain."
The Harriers are now hoping that those who took part will return to join training sessions with the club.
GB hurdler Tony Jarrett was forced to miss the event as he was due to have surgery and high-jumper Jo Jennings pulled out because she was on international duty.
"But the top athletes who came were brilliant," said Iris. "They stayed all day, encouraged the kids and presented certificates."
